Old Ottawa South

Bank Street's south stretch, two universities, and the canal and Rideau as natural boundaries.

The Neighbourhood

Old Ottawa South runs from the Rideau Canal to Bank Street and down to the Rideau River. Edwardian brick singles, with the kind of mature streetscape that takes a century to grow in. The Mayfair Theatre, Brewer Park, Carleton University across the bridge, Lansdowne and the Glebe one block north. It is small enough to feel like an enclave.

Homes are largely family-sized, four-bedroom singles with original brick, modernized inside. Some renovated centre-hall floor plans, some carefully kept Edwardian originals. The streets closest to the canal command a premium and trade rarely.

Buyers here usually have one or both partners walking or cycling to work at the universities, downtown, or the south-end government complexes. The neighbourhood feels insulated from the through-traffic that touches some of the other downtown pockets, and the canal pathway out the back door is the kind of amenity you can not buy elsewhere.
